Visit to Winchester Cathedral

The History Group visited Winchester Cathedral (a late replacement for our scheduled visit to King John's House) in March 2025.

The Cathedral is a fine building that shows the development of Gothic architecture from the Normans to the beginning of the Tudor period, the nave being particularly fine. But it was all at risk of collapse 120 years ago, as the timber raft under the Norman walls began to rot. The wonder is that it held up for 800 years! The building was saved by a diver - necessary as no ordinary workmen could get into the flooded foundations - working for 6 years with concrete and brick to underpin the walls.

We had a tour led by one of our members, after which we went our various ways, some to the excellent Kings and Scribes exhibition, some to the bus stop and even one or two to the cafe!
