Pétanque (also known as boules, or French bowls) is a game that can be played by almost everyone, mixed teams being the norm, who have enough strength and coordination to throw a steel ball (boule) a few yards. It is easy to learn and inexpensive to play.

The object of the game is for opposing teams to aim their boules at the cochonnet (like the jack in bowls) and points are scored for the number a team has nearer the cochonnet than the opposing team's nearest boule. When each team has thrown all their boules the score is taken and the game restarts from the other end of the terrain. The game ends when one team has scored 13 points.

Pétanque can be played on almost any type of surface other than grass.

Games can be either:

  • Singles: where each player plays with 3 boules
  • Doubles: two players in each of two teams playing against each other, where each player has 3 boules.
  • Triples: three players in each of two teams where each player has 2 boules.

While Pétanque can be played all year round it is generally played more in the summer.
