In November, the Theatre Goers group went to no fewer than three productions.
The first was Curtains, a musical comedy whodunnit written by the authors of Cabaret and Chicago. There were memorable songs, witty dialogue and a plethora of red herrings. All the voices were very strong, and the acting was equally impressive.
Next was Pygmalion at the Mast Studio. Most of us were familiar with the play and were surprised that the characters of Colonel Pickering and Freddie were omitted. However, the pared-down production worked well, and the two leads were excellent, although some of us were somewhat disconcerted by the oddity of Eliza's costumes. We were expecting Edwardian elegance rather than a loose white trouser suit, given that Mrs Higgins was wearing an outfit which suited the period.
The third production for November was Iolanthe at the Plaza. This was interesting because there was a music hall setting and music hall songs interspersed with the dialogue and the music of Iolanthe.
