The history group visited St Margaret’s Church Wellow for their May meeting.

We recently had a talk by one of our members on Florence Nightingale, and followed this up with a visit to her grave – in Wellow churchyard. This was her parish church for many years, as she lived at Embley Park, and used to walk the three miles there and three miles back across the fields. Besides the grave the church has medieval wall paintings, Jacobean woodwork, a flintlock musket nailed up in the chancel as a deodand, and three bells which we were invited to ring.
Several of us had a go, and found it excellent exercise for the arms. Hearty thanks are due to Mel the churchwarden for a guided tour, and to Barbara his wife for providing refreshments in the church rooms afterwards.
