On Wednesday 4 June, twenty members of the Romsey Archway travelled to Portsmouth for the tour led by Andrew Negus, a Blue Badge Guide and Speaker. This was a continuation of the walk that we took last year. From the Anglican Cathedral in the Old Town, we walked to the Portsmouth Point, taking in the Camber, the Royal Garrison Church, and the Round and Square Towers.
In part we followed the final journey of Horatio Nelson from the George Inn to where he boarded his barge to join his flagship, HMS Victory at anchor in Spithead on the 14 September 1803. As we walked through the old town, Andrew both educated and entertained us with stories about Portsmouth, from the enormous number of drinking establishments, the activities of the local Pols and the construction of its defences. As we walked to the point, it was clear that the history and buildings of Portsmouth are deeply linked with that of the Royal Navy. Finally, as we stood at Portsmouth Point, Andrew reminded us of the Navy's last battleship, HMS Vanguard has run aground here as it left the harbour for the last time to be scrapped, no doubt, like us, being reluctant to leave the city.
Again thanks to Sue Keith for organising the walking tour, and to Andrew for his excellent storytelling, that allowed us to imagine Portsmouth through the ages.
