An old and famous name in musicals, I was surprised to learn that it was the first musical written by Rogers and Hammerstein and was so successful that it ran on Broadway for 2,011 performances! I have fond memories of the music and songs because my parents loved Oklahoma! and listened to the soundtrack recording frequently.
The Theatre Goers Group went to see the Southampton Operatic Society at the Mast Theatre, Southampton, on Friday 10th July – the air-conditioning in the theatre was very welcome as it was a very hot evening! “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin” is such a joyful, arresting song and it was the prelude to an exuberant performance of a famous musical, performed with great energy. The story unfolds in a farming community that are raising money for a new schoolhouse and involves star-crossed lovers, jealousies and rivalries. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.
