May’s BigWalk followed an attractive seven-and-a-half mile route, mostly off-road, beginning in the lovely village of Rockbourne, near Fordingbridge. The weather was favourable for the six walkers. We traversed woodland and rolling farmland via the stud and racing stables at Whitsbury to Breamore’s ancient miz-maze before descending through woods past the Elizabethan manor house at Breamore and pausing for a brief rest at its tea-room. We completed the circuit back to Rockbourne through Kiln Wood and Radnall Wood. There we found that recent forestry work had churned up the ground significantly more than it had been when the walk was tried out two weeks earlier. However, we were tough enough to battle through to the finish in good spirits, muddier but cheered by our success over the unusually adverse conditions.
