June 2024: Nomansland

Rhododendron Lined road in the New Forest

The June ‘u3a Big Walk’ started at The Lamb Inn, but rather than taking the expected route straight into the forest , we headed off in the opposite direction, down School Lane and onto Lyburn Road, a quiet lane, lined with Rhododendrons on both sides making a lovely scenic start to the route.

When I recce’d the route the previous day, there was a Cuckoo serenading me for at least half of the route, and such a huge variety of birds. Our route took through Hamptworth Common, and Pimlico Firs until we eventually turned into Langley Woods where we then headed east, pausing on route for a group photo on a very long fallen log. Lunch break was a little further on, on some more fallen logs, before heading back through more woodland and open meadows until we finally arrived back at the Lamb Inn again.

It was my first walk and first walk that I was leading for the group! I thoroughly enjoyed not just the scenery, but the company too, what a genuinely lovely, friendly group of people!
