Cyber Security Event

On 13 Feb 2025, Romsey Archway u3a had an excellent presentation on cybercrime and how to maintain our cyber security from a member of the Hampshire and Isle of White Constabulary. The impact of this form of crime can be devastating on the victim, but as shown the route to maintaining cyber security is relatively simple:

  • Use strong and different passwords for your important accounts. A strong password is typically defined as no less than twelve characters in length. Additionally, activate 2FA (two-factor authentication) if possible for social media etc.
  • Ensure your data is backed up safely. It is normally recommended to store important information in three places, (i) on your machine, (ii) on a separate hard drive or USB stick (preferably encrypted) and finally remotely in the cloud.
  • Ensure the security features for your device or computer are activated and the anti-virus software and operating system are up-to-date.
  • While free wifi in cafes is convenient, it may not be secure, so avoid using this type of connection for personal information.
  • If you are using social media, check what you are sharing.
  • Thing twice (then once more) about clicking on links in emails or responding to other requests for information.
  • Always report a scam email or text message, so that the Police and others can build a picture of what criminals are up to and prepare the required response.
